Project Background
When a well-known gold mine in Western Australia’s Goldfields needed to open new areas underground, one challenge stood in the way: water. Groundwater management was critical to progress, and MTP’s service technicians were called in to deliver a reliable full-bore pump package deep below the surface.
What made this project extraordinary wasn’t just the technical complexity — it was the setting. Each day, the team arrived on site by light aircraft, descending into the rugged Goldfields before journeying 1.2 kilometres underground to tackle the job in near-total darkness.
Project Challenges
Flying in and out each day, the MTP service team quickly adapted to the mine’s rhythms. Early mornings began with safety briefings and pre-entry checks — PPE inspections, head torch readiness, and self-rescuer verifications became second nature.
Once underground, the team guided the installation of a bore pump at a site more than a kilometre below the surface, lowering it into a pre-drilled shaft plunging another 94 metres deeper. This wasn’t just a pump installation — it was engineering under pressure, in conditions few ever experience.
Project Solution
The MTP service team mobilised to site via a light aircraft each day and followed a structured daily routine, starting with early morning briefings and pre-entry safety checks. The bore pump was installed at the designated location approximately 1.2 kilometres underground, into a pre-drilled bore hole extending a further 94 metres down.

Key Components of the Solution
- Grundfos Bore Pump Package – Purpose-built for deep underground performance. As an industrial partner of Grundfos, MTP ensured every detail was technically supported and optimised for reliability.
- Angus Wellmaster WM250 Flexible Rising Main – Selected for its lightweight, coilable design and proven resistance to corrosion, scaling, and abrasion. Installed by MTP, a Wellmaster-certified installer, ensuring deployment to manufacturer standards for maximum safety and durability.
- Protocols – From Job Safety Analysis approvals to hands-on checks, safety was woven into every step of the installation.
Why MTP?
MMining operations turn to MTP because the team thrives where others might hesitate. Our people combine technical expertise with on-the-ground adaptability, tackling complex environments with practical, innovative solutions. Whether on the surface or a kilometre underground, safety, efficiency, and precision remain at the core.
Project Outcome
The new installation has transformed the mine’s ability to manage water inflow, opening up access to previously unreachable areas. By combining disciplined planning with hands-on grit, MTP delivered the project safely and efficiently — a clear demonstration of our expertise in underground dewatering.
And this is just the beginning: a second bore pump installation is already on the horizon, set to further expand the site’s capacity and keep progress moving forward.
